# Can ChatGPT or Claude remember what you eat?

Why an assistant's memory isn't a food log, what goes wrong when you track meals in a chat, and how to give ChatGPT or Claude a record that adds up.

**In short:** Only partly. ChatGPT's and Claude's memory is built to keep general things about you, such as a goal or a preference, not an exact record of every meal. For totals that add up and history you can look back on, connect a food journal such as Splot, which saves each meal with its foods, portions and nutrition.

It's natural to treat a chat as a food diary: you tell the assistant what you ate, it gives you the calories, and it seems to remember. That works for a day or two. It breaks down when you want reliable totals or a look back over weeks.

## What memory is for

Both ChatGPT and Claude can remember things about you across conversations. That memory holds the kind of thing a friend would remember: that you're vegetarian, training for a race, or aiming for more protein. It isn't designed to store every meal with its exact numbers, and you can't add up a day or a month from it.

## What goes wrong with a chat as a log

- **Meals are spread across chats.** A new conversation doesn't contain the meals you logged in the last one.
- **Estimates change.** The same meal can come out at a different number each time it's worked out, so totals shift.
- **Long chats lose detail.** In a very long conversation, early messages can fall out of what the assistant takes into account.
- **There's nothing to check or correct.** You can't open a list of what was recorded and fix a portion.

## What a food journal adds

Splot keeps the record, and your assistant does the thinking. When you tell ChatGPT or Claude what you ate, the assistant estimates the meal and saves it to your journal with its foods, portions and nutrition. From then on:

- every chat reads the same meals, so "same as yesterday" means something;
- each meal keeps the numbers it was saved with, so totals don't drift;
- you can open the journal yourself and correct anything;
- weeks of meals are there to ask about, against your own daily targets.

Your assistant reads the journal only through Splot, when a conversation needs it. You can disconnect it at any time. See [privacy and control](https://splot.health/docs/mcp/privacy).
