Can ChatGPT or Claude remember what you eat?

Why an assistant's memory isn't a food log, what goes wrong when you track meals in a chat, and how to give ChatGPT or Claude a record that adds up.

It’s natural to treat a chat as a food diary: you tell the assistant what you ate, it gives you the calories, and it seems to remember. That works for a day or two. It breaks down when you want reliable totals or a look back over weeks.

What memory is for

Both ChatGPT and Claude can remember things about you across conversations. That memory holds the kind of thing a friend would remember: that you’re vegetarian, training for a race, or aiming for more protein. It isn’t designed to store every meal with its exact numbers, and you can’t add up a day or a month from it.

What a food journal adds

Splot keeps the record, and your assistant does the thinking. When you tell ChatGPT or Claude what you ate, the assistant estimates the meal and saves it to your journal with its foods, portions and nutrition. From then on:

Your assistant reads the journal only through Splot, when a conversation needs it. You can disconnect it at any time. See privacy and control.
