How to track calories with ChatGPT

Use ChatGPT as a calorie tracker that keeps a record. Install the Splot plugin once, then log, plan and review your meals just by asking.

For ChatGPT2 min read

ChatGPT is good at estimating a meal. Describe your lunch or send a photo of it, and it can tell you roughly how many calories and how much protein, carbs and fat it has. What it doesn’t do on its own is keep the record.

Why a chat on its own isn’t a tracker

A food journal fixes all three. Splot saves every meal with its foods, portions and nutrition. ChatGPT reads and writes that journal whenever a conversation needs it.

Add the Splot plugin to ChatGPT

Splot is in ChatGPT’s plugin directory. Install it once, on chatgpt.com or in the ChatGPT app, and it works in both.

  1. Open Splot in ChatGPT’s plugins and choose Install plugin.
  2. When ChatGPT asks, connect Splot, sign in with Apple or Google and choose Allow access. If you’re new to Splot, this creates your account.
  3. In any chat, type @Splot or pick it from the + menu, and tell it what you ate.

The step-by-step guide has more detail if a menu looks different.

Log what you eat

Talk to ChatGPT the way you’d talk to someone keeping your journal:

ChatGPT works out the foods and portions, asks when something isn’t clear, and saves the meal. Its estimate is marked as an estimate in your journal, and you can correct it later: “That was only half the bowl.”

Keep track of the day

Set your daily targets once, for example “Set my targets to 2,000 kcal, 130 g protein, 220 g carbs and 65 g fat.” From then on you can ask:

ChatGPT answers from the meals in your journal, not from memory.

Plan and look back

Ask for a dinner that fits what’s left of your day, and ChatGPT saves it as a planned meal. It counts towards your totals only once you’ve eaten it.

After a few weeks, ask bigger questions: “Compare my weekdays with my weekends” or “Which days did I hit my protein target?” ChatGPT reads your own meals to answer.
